We understand that parents and carers want to know about the policies and procedures that underpin our education provision for children and young people with additional requirments.
At Swallow Grange, every pupil matters. We are a specialist alternative provision supporting children aged 4–11 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), with a particular focus on Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Our provision is built on the belief that inclusion is not an add-on — it is at the heart of everything we do.
All pupils at Swallow Grange are considered to have SEND. We specialise in supporting children with SEMH needs, autism spectrum conditions, communication and interaction difficulties, and learning disabilities, including those with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Placements are commissioned by Local Authorities and referring schools for pupils who require personalised, part-time provision beyond what can be provided in a mainstream setting.
Every pupil joins us with a thorough assessment process, drawing on referral information, EHCPs, professional reports, and baseline assessments on entry. We take a graduated, holistic approach — following the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle — to ensure provision is always responsive to each child's evolving needs.
Support is highly personalised and may include individualised learning plans, small group or 1:1 sessions, therapeutic interventions, structured routines, and an adapted curriculum. Where a pupil has an EHCP, their provision is aligned directly to their specified outcomes and targets.
We know that the right environment is fundamental to learning, particularly for children with SEMH needs. Our spaces are small, calm, and low-arousal, with dedicated regulation areas to support emotional wellbeing. Clear layouts and consistent routines help pupils feel safe and ready to learn.
We believe the best outcomes come from strong partnerships. We work closely with parents and carers, keeping them involved in reviews, planning, and regular progress updates. We also collaborate with a wide range of external professionals — including Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and CAMHS — to ensure a truly holistic approach to each child's support.
Supporting pupils through transition is a key part of what we do, whether that is settling into Swallow Grange, reintegrating into a mainstream or specialist setting, or moving on to the next stage of education. Transition planning is always individualised and carefully managed.
